Oh No

Ben RoethlisbergerThis week has not been a very good week for me. If you pay attention to the NFL you probably saw Ben Roethlisberger get straight jacked up. The Steelers were playing a meaningless game and Big Ben got destroyed and suffered a “mild” concussion. I don’t really believe there is such a thing as a “mild” concussion as any concussion can ruin your playing career.

Do I blame Mike Tomlin for keeping Ben in? No, he was trying to win and that is what counts in the end. Roethlisberger should be fine for Pittsburgh’s first playoff game. That is all that matters right now. What I am really worried about is if the Steelers’ offensive line will be able to keep the defense off of Berger’s back long enough for him to throw a freaking pass.

Another depressing point of my holiday weekend came last night. USC man handled Penn State. The Nittany Lion defense didn’t show up in the first half, getting beat deep early and often. What is really making me mad though is how everyone on ESPN is saying that USC “destroyed, crushed, annihilated, rolled over, and burned Penn State.” Last time I checked they won by 14 points. Those adjectives selected by the “experts” would describe a win by at least 28 points. USC did however win every aspect of the game but in the end it wasn’t a horrible loss.

Rose BowlPenn State scored 17 points in the second half on a defense that had only allowed 3 second half touchdowns all year. How is that being rolled over? They say that Daryll Clark made horrible passes. One of his interceptions Andrew Quarless fell down, that is why the ball was picked. His throw was accurate, the receiver just fell down. That isn’t Clark’s fault. We should also remember that this was basically a home game for USC. Penn State had to travel about 2,500 miles while the Trojans traveled a whole 11 miles. You are kidding yourself if you think USC didn’t have home field advantage.

Manny RamirezI have been finding this whole Manny Ramirez thing very interesting. Where will he go? The Yankees and Angels aren’t interested and Boston definitely isn’t. The Dodgers pulled their offer and the Giants are now in the mix. He isn’t going to get the money he expected to so this will be interesting to watch. I can see that the Giants are trying to get better but I think they are just going to end up shooting themselves in the foot. They are in no way shape or form a young team. They have a few very nice, young pieces that they need to build around.

I don’t like the Edgar Renteria signing and I think bringing in Manny will just be another Barry Bonds. He will cause drama and tear the team apart in the clubhouse. He won’t get his money and we all know that he will not be a happy Manny when he does sign. And we all know that a happy Manny doesn’t play and will give up on his team. Manny isn’t exactly young either and that is exactly what that Giants team does not need. If I was a Giants fan I would appreciate them trying to get better but I don’t believe they are picking the right players.

Till next time,

~Ben

American League Playoffs

Well it looks like I was 1 for 4 in my playoff predictions. The only series I got right was the Tampa-Chicago series. The Angels lost to the Red Sox and proved me wrong…again.

It turned out that the Red Sox were a little better than I thought and made the Angels look bad. It happens. Tampa played just the way I thought they would and took it to the White Sox. The Red Sox are on a roll and the Rays are just to young. In all honesty I really want the Rays to win. They deserve it. I just really don’t think they are a better team than the Red Sox.

They may have had a better record but I just don’t think that when the occasion arises that they will step up. Boston just has to much talent and experience. Tampa has so much talent its not fair but they have no experience.

Tampa has home field advantage so I think they will win at least 2 games. Even with home field advantage I doubt that the Rays will be able to beat Boston when it counts. The Rays are the feel good story of the year but they just don’t have the experience needed to succeed this far into the season. Next year looks good if they can keep the team together or add a piece.

As much as I like the Rays, Boston is just to good and will win this series. It will be a Boston-Los Angeles World Series this year. Yes, Manny will return to Boston but as a Dodger.

National League Playoffs

So it’s final. I was completely wrong in my predictions. The Cubs decided to not play at all and got completely smashed by the Dodgers.

The Cubs should have destroyed the Dodgers with their offense and pitching. The vintage Cubs showed up and lost as usual. They dominate the regular season and when it matters they crumble under the pressure. Sorry Cubs fans but this is getting ridiculous.

As for the Milwaukee-Philly series, what the heck happened? After fighting from behind, trading away their future for a rent-a-player and firing their coach, the Brewers rolled over and got their butts kicked. C.C was amazing until the playoffs. It happens to some of the best but for as good as he was he should have thrown another complete game shutout.

Milwaukee’s offense was no where to be found. Philly has no starting pitching outside of Cole Hamels. Brett Myers has been inconsistent and Jamie Moyer’s own kids say he drives faster than he throws. Seriously, with Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun in the middle of the order you should see some serious runs.

The Cubs and the Brewers should have won those games. But they didn’t and that’s life. Philly will take on the Dodgers later this week. The Dodgers have so much momentum going into the series that they could easily be the Cinderella team. Everyone thinks the Rays are the Cinderella team but the Dodgers shouldn’t even be in the playoffs.

I think in the end Los Angeles will have to much momentum on their side and will make it to the World Series where they will be crushed by whoever the American League sends.
